Crêpes for Change @ Bentleigh Festival

Bentleigh Festival is please to have Crepes for Change attending the Festival, they do some great work in our community.

There are over 44,000 young people experiencing homelessness in Australia every night. It’s hard to believe, but it’s true. We think that’s 44,000 too many.

These young Australians (people under the age of 25) make up 42% of the entire homeless population in our country. For them, the uncertainty about the night’s sleep ahead is a stressful reality that often means sleeping outdoors, in cars, between friends’ houses or in emergency accommodation. Juggling education, work, relationships and wellbeing becomes increasingly difficult to do without stable and safe accommodation.

The high prevalence of mental and physical health problems within this group, combined with an existing experience of disadvantage, can make the challenge of breaking the cycle seem insurmountable. Being homeless in Australia is one of the most socially isolating experiences a young person can go through; a disadvantage that may have ramifications for the rest of their life.

Crêpes for Change was born from the desire to support these young people who are currently experiencing homelessness or who are at risk via the power of an innovative social enterprise business model.

We’re Australia’s first non-profit crêpe van, and we’re entirely youth-led. Our team comprises of more than 40 amazing volunteers and 5 employees. Every one of us is passionate about making a difference. Youth homelessness is a multi-faceted problem, and one without a single solution. With this in mind, the heart of our impact is the investment in sustainable solutions to qualitatively transform lives. Our theory of change is based on identifying holistic approaches that fundamentally equip the young people we help with the confidence, skills and experience to be the masters of their own destiny and escape homelessness.

Our crêpe van roams Melbourne’s streets, markets and festivals, reinvesting all profits towards eliminating youth homelessness. Recently, we launched The Coffee Cart Changing Lives which runs on the same non-profit impact model. Not only are we driven by our cause, but our crêpes are worth knowing about. Using our founder’s family recipe from La Bretagne, France, our crêpes are authentic and made with purpose. We also have grand plans to reinvent our menu in the near future. Every single crêpe and coffee sold takes us a step closer towards eliminating youth homelessness.

We do what we do because we want to make a difference in the world. We love it and we’re just getting started.
